At this years Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, the Swedish Film Institute will co-host a webinar on inclusion in the film industry, as a follow up on the progress of the 50/50 by 2020 movement. Creating the New Normal: Intersectionality in the Film Industry, featuring amongst others Swedish Film Institute CEO Anna Serner, will take place on Monday June 22 and be open to the public.

The panel will discuss paths toward an inclusive future for the film industry, where the creativity and business acumen of all its stakeholders is fully realized, without prejudice and bias. Panelists will weigh in on the state of the industry, talk about creative ways to move forward in the rapidly changing cultural and entrepreneurial landscape, and follow up on the progress of the 50/50 by 2020 movement.

–​ Our industries are facing an unprecedented situation, with production shutdowns and closed theaters, alongside rising global demands for justice and equality, The topics of gender equality and inclusion are more important now than ever, says Anna Serner, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute. We have to lay a solid foundation for the future of the industry, by making sure we have representation on-screen and off-screen: in the stories we tell, in the people who tell them and in the meeting rooms where those decisions are made.

The Swedish Film Institute is honored to be invited to co-host this event in partnership with Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes, at a time when the industry, and the cultural landscape, is being reshaped. In 2014, the Swedish Film Institute was the first public film financing body to achieve gender parity in public film funding. The Swedish Film Institute launched 50/50 by 2020 at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Since then, the initiative has spread globally and the work for gender equality has intensified at all levels of the industry.

The event will be broadcast for market badge holders on Marché du Film Online. Highlighting the Marché du Film’s ambition to contribute to change in the industry, the event will also be available on the Marché du Film’s YouTube channel, where it will be free and open to the public.

About 50/50 by 2020

The campaign 50/50 by 2020 was launched by the Swedish Film Institute at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. Shortly after the event, several national governing bodies took up the challenge, and since then organizations such as Eurimage, alongside several non-profit initiatives and multinational corporations have adopted the goal of 50/50 by 2020. Festivals such as the Berlinale, Festival de Cannes, and the Venice Film Festival have signed gender parity pledges, and the industry has shifted towards a greater awareness of the importance of equality and non-discrimination for the quality of work, the stories we collective tell, and the bottom line.
